A Kalbeliya gypsy at her home in the suburbs of Udaipur. Traditionally desert nomads they catch snakes and train them to the sound of ‘pungi’, for which they are called ‘snake charmers’, their dance too has movement alluding to snakes. This community of Kalbeliya now perform their traditional dances in hotels.

This is a powerful depiction of the threatened nomad lifestyle. The carts are tangible symbols of a by-gone era of a prosperous nomadic lifestyle. However, they have not moved in seven years as nomadism no longer serves a purpose in modern India. The wall behind the carts marks the division between the settlement and the town. Racial, social and economic barriers that isolate the nomads; they are on the margins of society.
